Thailand needs sustainable agrifood systems approach to increase safe food production, agriculture trade, and famer income. Radio Thailand talks to the German’s supported international cooperation organization for sustainable development or Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Mr. Suriyan Vichitlekarn, a Senior Regional Advisor to ASEAN Sustainable Agrifood Systems, about the agrifood systems and how to make it sustainability.

Sustainable agrifood systems, according to Mr. Suriyan, means the production of safe and nutritious food which is safe for both producers, consumers and environment, and the accessibility and affordability of the safe and nutritious food to everyone while farmers and producers along the agriculture value chain can enjoy the privilege of sustainable income and livelihood and natural resources are being treated with high value and respect.

How to do that? Mr. Suriyan says it requires a strong awareness among the consumers, farmers and policy makers, and the government must provide supports in terms of infrastructure, technology production and knowledge, and access to the technology and knowledge, market and credits.
