Thirty government and institute officers from 10 countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) gathered for the “2nd Regional Technical Workshop on Crop Insurance in ASEAN”
on 17-18 September 2018 in Bangkok, Thailand.

In these two-day workshops, the participants shared their views and discussed the actions needed to develop policy frameworks, collect data analysis and improve information systems on crop insurance, as well as to provide knowledge on crop insurance to small-holder farmers and engage partners in different sectors to add value to crop insurance policy to submit the frameworks to governments in ASEAN.

The workshop ultimately aimed for the experts to develop and promote crop insurance into policy frameworks within ASEAN and linkages with 10 Phases in the Developing a National Crop Insurance Program Guide Overview of ASEAN under four strategies.

The strategies include: 1) Policy and legal framework, 2) Stakeholder engagement and Public and Private Partnership (PPP), 3) Data Information and ICT (including satellite), 4) Pilot activities and up-scaling.

The workshop was supported by the Department of Agriculture Thailand in cooperation with the Agriculture and Food Cluster of German International Cooperation or Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

Following this workshop, Mr. Tommy Nugraha, from the Ministry of Agriculture Indonesia and host of the 11th Steering Committee Meeting of the ASEAN Sustainable Agrifood Systems (ASEAN SAS) gave an update on progress and achievements to date and provided guidance on the important issues to include in the policy framework promoting crop insurance in ASEAN.
