Livelihoods Funds Project: Regenerative Rice Farming in Thailand

When soil is well taken care of, inorganic and organic fertilizers are applied with care and water is used with respect, farmers will then enjoy the seeds of success they have sown. More than 150 farmers in central Thailand are coming back to stand firm on their feet with a support of Livelihoods Funds Project: Regenerative Rice Farming in Thailand, highlighting responsible agriculture cultivation with a link to market sources.

Our Goals

To pilot a unique regenerative rice cultivation method for restoring long-term soil fertility with fewer inputs & water, and providing cash crop diversification for rice smallholder farmers

Areas of Implementation

Central province of Ang Thong, Thailand

Rice is a major crop for Thai household consumption and export purposes. Despite continuous support from government, it is confronted with unoptimized yields while production costs and unpredictable weather conditions put farmers’ margins at risk. With the end of subsidized farmgate prices, conventional rice cultivation appears not profitable anymore. Plus, the high use of agrochemical input has resulted in soil degradation and lower yield.

Five partners are working closely to implement anew agronomic model based on soil improvement and provide a financial package for 150 farmers located in the heartlands of Thai rice production. During this one-year testing phase, rice production from the recruited farmers is purchased, and linked to a traceable supply chain, in order to improve farmers’ income.
