Improving Smallholder Coffee Farming Systems in Southeast Asia
(Coffee+ Thailand)

Coffee+ Thailand

A good taste of coffee comes with great responsibility. Coffee drinkers can always enjoy their sips of coffee while coffee farmers can enjoy reaping benefits of sustainable coffee plantation. The Coffee+ project invites small-holder coffee farmers in Southern Thailand to a Farmer Business School (FBS) to learn good practices for sustainable Robusta coffee plantation and entrepreneurial knowledge and skills. Farmers get connect with other farmers, build their networks and become entrepreneurs themselves.

Our Goals

To improve the economic viability of the farming system that will benefit at least 10,500 small-scale coffee farmers, 2,000 of whom are in Thailand. Farmers will have business mind-set viewing “farming as a business” and acquire strong entrepreneurial knowledge & skill and apply it to their farm planning of activities and expenses, and get more income through diversified and competitive production system.

Areas of Implementation

Chumphon and Ranong provinces of Thailand

Although demand for coffee is constantly increasing, there has been a dramatic decline in coffee production in producing countries in the region over the past years. The reasons behind low productivity include declining coffee plantation areas, which is contrary to growing demand and consumption for it, degraded soil and inefficient land-use, lack of business attitude, knowledge and skill among coffee farmers and little adoption of best farming practices and management.

Coffee+ project provides capacity development to smallholder coffee farmers by equipping them with entrepreneurial attitude, knowledge and skill through GIZ’s learning tool called “Farmer Business School (FBS)” which is packed with interventions on best farming practices and diversified income through inter/multi-cropping system. The project strengthens existing structure of farmer group/organization and supports creations of local ownership, and learning alliance. To secure long-term sustainability of the measure, knowledge and learning tools developed in partnership will be publicized and made available.
