It is not only good agricultural practices, but relationships that are strengthened.

Peer learning is necessary in strengthening good agricultural practices between ASEAN neighboring countries.

In collaboration with the bilateral project Trade Development Programme and the support of the regional ASEAN Sustainable Agrifood Systems project, the Standards in the Southeast Asian Food Trade project recently organized a study trip on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) Extension Services, Regulatory Inspection and Certification Programme in Thailand for a delegation from Myanmar from 19-23 June 2017.

The purpose of this activity was for Myanmar regulators to better understand the regulatory implementation of the GAP extension, inspection, and certification process in Thailand and to apply lessons learnt during the study trip to their own national GAP Programme.

The delegates from Myanmar learned about national policies, regulations and available government support on GAP Programme as well as about the accreditation and certification system, extension services, and laboratory testing services in Thailand. Participants visited the National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity and Food Standards (ACFS), Plant Standard and Certification Division of Department of Agriculture, Thailand and Central Laboratory (Thailand). The delegates also got to visit the Chainart Field Crop Research Center to learn more about mung bean production and processing in Thailand. Information, challenges and experiences of the two countries were shared during discussions and site visits.

This activity was designed to enhance peer to peer learning among ASEAN Member States.
